Gravity: Season 1, Episode 3 “One Cold Swim Away” (B+)
This is one peculiar show, but I think it’s shaping up to be a good one. At this point, it seems like the way this show could work is by showcasing a different person’s story, starting from how and why they originally tried to commit suicide and then taking them to a place of relative closure. This one was quite a story, featuring a standout performance from James Martinez as Jorge. The way that each person’s story is revealed with accompanying music is simply spectacular, and that’s definitely my favorite part of this show. Jorge’s story is particularly amusing, and some of the great moments included him getting what he thought was a number from a woman who said that he was her “thing” but only meant that in the sense that she specializes in penis enlargement and his bathroom confrontation with another person far more well-endowed than he. The most hilarious scene was the closing one with his new appendage presenting somewhat of a problem, and the confidence he was exuding during that was particularly fantastic. There are such great conversations on this show between all the characters. We only saw Carla for a moment, but her presence, as well as her note to Lilly about loving her new life, was a delight. I’m so glad that Miller went to go see Robert about his potential brain tumor and didn’t even really why about why he was actually there. Miller and Lilly talking is magnificent as well, and I liked quotes such as “would you like the truth or the lie?” and “can’t we talk about normal things?”
