What I’m Watching: Chuck

Chuck: Season 3, Episode 9 “Chuck Versus the Beard” (A-)

What an awesome episode. This is truly a game-changer because now Morgan knows everything, and like most things on this show, it’s a move that should only make thing better in the future. The way he found out was absolutely perfect, and seeing him watch Chuck in action was amazing. This episode stands out because it’s sort of like a more comedic version of the “Alias” two-part episode “The Box” guest-starring Quentin Tarantino where everyone comes together as part of the same storyline but no one was quite aware of it. Just like when Vaughn came to SD-6 and Dixon sent an e-mail to the real CIA telling them they were in trouble, Morgan discovered that the Ring was at the Buy More and Jeff took out a bad guy with the chloroform he uses to get high. Casey telling Jeff to “peace out” was pretty funny as a stunned reaction. Casey also had a spectacular line explaining why they didn’t put Awesome in the Witness Protection Program after he found out about Chuck: “that’s because Awesome is Awesome and Morgan is Morgan.” The we’re-about-to-die conversation between Chuck and Morgan where Chuck finally came clean was great, but the best part about it was Morgan’s reaction to Sarah and Casey being spies. Morgan summed up his role as Chuck’s best friend well by proclaiming that “it’s awful that you had to pretend to be in a relationship with someone you clearly love.” And there’s also a terrific comic element to it all, with Morgan yelling at Chuck for flashing on Duck Hunt. I can’t wait for future weeks now that Morgan’s in the loop.
