Friday Fall Preview: The Playboy Club

For the past few years, I’ve wanted to do a summer feature where I took a look at one upcoming show each week. Come back every Friday for a new Fall Preview, and suggest an upcoming show to be featured if you’re looking forward to it!

The Playboy Club – Mondays at 10pm (NBC)

This show represents an interesting gamble on NBC’s part for a few reasons. For one thing, it’s set in the 1960s. For another, it’s about Playboy. Now what’s notable about this is that it’s not NBC’s first foray into the 1960s. “American Dreams” aired for three seasons several years ago and did just fine, so maybe this one will have a chance. “30 Rock” and “Love Bites” have demonstrated that NBC isn’t afraid to take risks in the 10pm hour, including content that might otherwise be taboo in an earlier time slot. This looks intriguing as a trailer, and the question becomes whether that style and mood will translate to the actual show itself. I liked the trailer a lot until Amber Heard killed someone, but hopefully that won’t be a big part of the show. Eddie Cibrian is occasionally good when he doesn’t take himself seriously, and though Heard tends to play unchallenging parts, she’s usually pretty good at them. I’m willing to give this one a shot, and I’m hopeful that it makes the gamble well worth it.
