What I’m Watching: Covert Affairs (Season Premiere)

Covert Affairs: Season 2, Episode 1 “Begin the Begin” (B-)

After an unconventional ten months off the air, for a USA show at least, this series is back for its second season. The first year became fun a few episodes in and only occasionally reached a level of true quality, and therefore expectations will play a big part in how good this season ends up being. First off, we have a few faces that were regularly around last season officially added to the opening credits – Sendhil Ramamurthy as Jai, Anne Dudek as Danielle, and Peter Gallagher as Arthur. That doesn’t technically involve anyone new, and if there’s any character that is going to seriously shake things up this year, it’s Ben. At least it’s nice to know that Ben actually does care about Annie and that it’s Arthur and CIA protocol that’s prohibiting him from reaching out to her rather than his own desires. This episode’s particular mission involving Estonia, tennis, and chocolate wasn’t all that interesting, and the highlight by far was Auggie’s smooth extraction of the target where he made his blindness work in his favor. I would like to see Danielle featured more prominently in this season in a more relevant and intelligent way, somehow involved with some CIA plot even if she doesn’t quite know it. I’m not quite sure where this season will be headed, even with Ben involved, and I’m hopeful that this show is able to stand on its episodic plotlines rather than be carried by a season-long arc that plays out in the background.
