What I’m Watching: Masters of Sex (Season Finale)

Masters of Sex: Season 2, Episode 12 “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” (D+)

It was possible that everything that has transpired this season could have been made at least something worthwhile by a satisfactory finale that legitimized all that led up to it. Yet that’s not at all what we got. Instead, Bill committed his most selfish and destructive act of self-sabotage yet, asking his old friend Barton Scully to call up his number one competitor in the field of sex research and ensure that they made it to the finish line first, effectively negating the potential impact that Bill’s study was set to have. Worst of all, he took down Virginia with him. She was so banking on the success of the study that she even gave up her children to stick by Bill, and clearly he doesn’t have nearly the same commitment as she does. I don’t know where this story goes from here and why we’re still supposed to be interested, but I for one will certainly not be tuning in to season three. We got a small glimpse of the old adventurous Libby when she defiantly went to Robert’s apartment late at night and rekindled their affair, but she’s a shell of the character she once was. Flo revealing her political family dynasty was an unnecessary twist, and I think we’ve seen plenty of times that Austin could feel incompetent without needing to have her literally shame him into feeling like a dumb blond. I wasn’t sure about the direction of this show at the end of season one after a very promising start, and now I’m simply disappointed in how what could have been a great show turned into a completely overwrought one.

Season grade: C
Season MVP: Julianne Nicholson as the late Dr. DePaul
