What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy: Season 4, Episode 5 “Brick” (B+)

Things are getting dangerously serious at the moment, with three near-fatal developments of very different kinds. Otto talking to Gemma at the beginning of the episode to find out if Bobby was the one who killed Luann leads to the introduction of David Hasselhoff’s Dondo and the near execution of Tom Arnold’s Georgie. If there’s one TV character I wouldn’t want to mess with, it’s Otto. Aside from being played by series creator Kurt Sutter, he’s been in jail for the entire run of the series and has taken some pretty violent measures while in prison. Keeping Georgie alive to help business is not going to turn out to have been a good decision once Otto gets wind of it, so let’s hope that doesn’t happen anytime soon. What shocked me most in this hour was Clay explicitly discussing, with both Gemma and Unser, the fact that he had John killed, apparently for some malicious reason that horrifies even Unser. Piney’s getting himself into hot water with his threats to Clay, and I can’t imagine this is going to end well. Unser appears to be just a pawn in all this, getting different marching orders from Gemma and Clay. Juice being given a loyalty test seems to have backfired already as the club realizes that they’re one brick short, and Linc seems to have no qualms about throwing both Juice and Roosevelt under the bus for the sake of making a case against SAMCRO. Opie finding Lyla’s birth control and cheating on her isn’t going to have positive consequences either, though in the grand scheme of things, that’s nothing compared to everything else that’s going on at the moment.
