Round Two: How to Be a Gentleman

How to Be a Gentleman: Season 1, Episode 2 “How to Have a One-Night Stand” (B)

Imagine my disappointment when, in going to review this episode yesterday afternoon, I discovered that, as of Saturday, it had been officially cancelled after being moved earlier to a Saturday night slot that was clearly never going to get it anywhere good. It’s most unfortunate because this show was cancelled mainly because of the network it aired on and the time slot in which it got put. Even more lamentable than that is that I believe I’m one of the show’s sole advocates. Perhaps it’s because supporting players like Mary Lynn Rajskub and Rhys Darby were properly used rather than squandered, but it may just be because this show was generally enjoyable. Even if it’s not the smartest or most hilarious comedy, it’s still fun and I enjoyed these characters for the brief time I knew them. This show may well continue on Saturday nights for a bit, and I’ll stick with it until the end. This show certainly was not on par with “The Playboy Club” or “Free Agents.” In this episode, Bert living with Andrew presented the opportunity for some amusing situations, as did Andrew’s interest in the cellist played by Elizabeth Bogush, most memorable to me as the x-ray girl J.D. asked out in season one of “Scrubs.” Their relationship is improving steadily, and I like that, slowly but surely, they’re becoming true friends. Mike’s green card interview was generally entertaining, with Janet’s bad test-taking skills coming into play at just the wrong time, though, in the end, they were so married, it’s gross.
