What I’m Watching: Dexter (Season Premiere)

Dexter: Season 6, Episode 1 “Those Kinds of Things” (B+)

After a very lengthy segment running through the past five seasons, this terrific show returns for its sixth season as Dexter explains how sometimes things don’t work out, and other times, everything goes exactly according to plan, as he gleefully electrocutes two paramedics. This is, more than anything, a season introducer, with much of the action saved for the episode’s later moments and plenty of mystery being put on the table, specifically when it comes to the new characters played by Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos. Dexter’s search for preschools for Harrison, accompanied by his expression of “I don’t believe in anything,” presents a great backdrop for this season, as Dexter realizes that he has to decide what he does want to pass on to his son. Dexter’s trip to his class reunion was highly entertaining, starting with his apparent popularity, egged on by his father, and peaking with the rather enthusiastic reception he gets from his former classmate Trisha. At the station, there are plenty of changes afoot, as Laguerta proves once again that she’s as cutthroat as they come by blackmailing Matthews into a promotion, a more stable Batista begins a fresh relationship with his sister, Masuka hires interns, and Quinn prepares to propose to Deb, only to have a shooter ruin the mood. It’s unclear what’s going on with the religious murder of the fruit vendor, but nothing says more than the excited look on Dexter’s face when he sees those snakes crawl out of the dead guy. It looks like this season is going to be quite engaging and thrilling.
