What I’m Watching: The Office

The Office: Season 6, Episode 8 “Koi Pond” (B-)

This isn’t a bad episode of this show; it’s just not that terrific. There are still a number of laughs thanks to the comedic talents of Steve Carrell and the whole cast, but it’s not their best work. It’s quite strange to see someone taking Michael more seriously than Jim, though there is a reason that Michael is still manager of the branch after all these years of appearing to do nothing. Jim’s discomfort and Michael’s amusement were both fun, but not seeing any of their meeting together was a bit disappointing. This now marks at least the second time Michael has come back to the office soaking wet, and it’s truly unfortunate that his pratfall isn’t seen here because the scene where he drove into the lake was one of the funniest moments of this show I’ve ever seen. Seeing it on video later was mildly amusing, but it can’t compare to the impact actually seeing it happen would have had. Jim not coming to Michael’s aid seems very out of character for him, even if he was momentarily jealous of Michael’s standing. It’s interesting to see the office turn on Jim, but it just isn’t a completely winning plotline. Michael’s already mocked himself enough in the past, and while it never gets too old, it’s starting to head in that direction. Pam and Andy’s failure to be an effective sales duo is a shame, especially considering the fantastic success of the last sales teams episode. The thought Andy has put into his future child is a bit creepy, but the potential of his relationship with Erin is a positive thing. Erin has turned out to be a fine addition to the show, and seeing more of her soon should be nice.

So far, season 3 has been slightly uneven, but mostly terrific. I flat out loved "Gay Witch Hunt". The next two episodes were decent, nothing special. "Grief Counseling" was great, and "Initation" had some terrific moments as well. I am falling in love with this show.

Well look at that! Glad you're enjoying. Just wait for the last few episodes of season 3, they're terrific.
