What I’m Watching: Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty: Season 4, Episode 4 “The Wiener, the Bun, and the Boob” (B-)

This episode is a bit odd due to the unusual devices used again and again, such as the slow-motion accidental breast graze by Daniel and the exteriorization of Wilhelmina’s thoughts as narration. Wilhelmina has always been most entertaining when she’s being devious and scheming, and tying her down to babysitting duty for Nico makes her far less interesting. It was obvious that someone would have spied her boatside murder cover-up and try to blackmail her; I guess that’s coming up. Nico’s presence was good for one thing, and that was making Marc act as Betty’s assistant for the day. Their tour around the city of the worst jobs in New York was typically amusing, and the way it eventually developed into a shared helping out of each other. I’m sure the sense of camaraderie and even possibly friendship won’t last long, but it’s nice to see them getting along for a bit at least. It’s a nice high point for Daniel to actually get something right for a change as he’s able to deal with the tricky situation of his Lexi-like-sexy secretary and make it work for everyone. Hilda’s sexy photo scandal isn’t exactly germane to the rest of the plot, and while it’s a typical overstep on the part of the high-drama hairdresser, it’s a bit silly and altogether expected, especially after Ignacio made such a loud fuss about getting his e-mail to work. Marc and Betty’s joint successes are a good indicator of what may be to come for this show, while everything else doesn’t help the show get very far.
