What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 2, Episode 24 “Winston’s Birthday” (B)

This was not one of the show’s best episodes, but it did contain some of the funniest moments I’ve seen in a while. Having Rob Reiner visit just after Jess and Nick finally slept together was actually pretty brilliant, and it was amusing to see him in a role that was played mostly as the straight man to Nick’s fidgeting, nervous host who ultimately decided that it would be worthwhile to admit to the man that he had actually bedded his daughter. Jess’ reaction to the news that Bob and Nick were discussing girls was hilarious, and I like how flustered Nick got under pressure. Jess getting the opportunity to teach in a miserable classroom was only mildly amusing, and more just an excuse to have her running around all day before she had a chance to fix everyone’s problems. We didn’t get to see much of Mary Lynn Rajskub as Peg, and I do hope that the show has something more elaborate planned for this eccentric comedian, who last starred in “How to Be a Gentleman” and should be familiar to most TV audiences for her work as Chloe on “24.” Cece ending up with a beard wasn’t all that exciting, and Winston constantly thinking his birthday wouldn’t be forgotten ranked at a similar level. Schmidt treating Elizabeth poorly was unfortunately expected, but it was well worth it for the sheer joy and synchronicity of their geeky dance towards the end of the episode. The battle for roof space was something that I hope will translate in future installments to some double or triple dates.
