What I’m Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 3, Episode 3 “Backwards-like” (B+)

What a rollercoaster ride for Issa, who was imagining having passionate sex with Daniel at the start of the episode, decided not to move out of the apartment when he suggested she stay only to then take the property manager job, and then turned down the chance to start up the relationship again when Daniel made the first move. Her friends definitely weren’t into it, and it became clear when Daniel lashed out – and laughed – at Issa for daring to give him career advice, judging her for thinking that she could stay on top of managing a property when she locked herself out of his apartment four times. The prime African-American candidate at We Got Y’All asked Issa a seemingly irritating question about what it’s like to be black at a non-diverse office, but what was much more important was her follow-up, which was to express that Issa must really like it there, something that just isn’t really true. I don’t think that the property manager job is going to give her all the satisfaction she’s seeking, but it should help her to feel somewhat accomplished. At the very least she’s going to be able to go out on her own and start a new life, something that will make her feel like she’s more in control of her choices. Molly’s new job isn’t going as she hoped, and she’s quickly developed a reputation for not being used to how things might be different here, which is going to make the transition much more difficult.
