What I’m Watching: Why Women Kill

Why Women Kill: Season 1, Episode 4 “You Had Me at Homicide” (B)

Things are devolving a bit in terms of the seriousness of this already over-the-top series, and while I’m still watching closely, I hope that it doesn’t get too out of control. Opening and closing with a coroner talking about what keeps him in business is a strange device, one that reminded me a lot of similar introductions and epitaphs on “Desperate Housewives.” Beth Ann was having a wonderful time with April until she offered her pot brownies, resulting in Beth Ann predictably getting high before she had to be on display in front of Rob’s work colleagues for a dinner. Challenging his boss to a napkin-folding contest didn’t end the way I expected it to, with Rob actually noticing his wife and realizing that he needed to spend time with her for the first time since this show started. Simone hilariously set herself up for real trouble when her rejection of Tommy’s attempt at romance nearly resulted in her daughter sleeping with him. Karl defending Brad made Simone keeping their troubles a secret difficult, but she’s up for the challenge. I loved her delivery of “When you drink without a glass, Brad wins” was perfect. Eli’s efforts to be manly and impress the two women, or more importantly, the newest woman, in his life failed miserably, and he managed both to upset his wife by potentially implicating her in a crime and also compelled Duke to come charging into his home to cause as much damage as possible. It looks like Jade isn’t going anywhere, though both her new partners are feeling closer to her than to each other right now.
