Modern Love: Season 2, Episode 8 “Second Embrace, With Hearts and Eyes Open” (B+)
I was looking forward to watching what I knew would be the final episode of the season since I interviewed both Sophie Okonedo and Tobias Menzies, for their Emmy-nominated roles on “Ratched” and “The Crown,” respectively, and they both mentioned what a joy it was to be able to shoot this. I also thought that this episode was well-timed coming at the end of the season, especially after so many unresolved, missed opportunities and also showcases of much younger people. In this case, Elizabeth and Van seemed to get along fine after getting used to what it was like to be divorced, and they had the opportunity to fall back in love as they realized that, at this point in their lives, they might enjoy being together more than they enjoyed being apart. Naturally, that also came with grander implications and continued divergences in their ways of thinking, like Van deciding to propose in a very romantic manner while Elizabeth wasn’t even considering something like that, especially in light of the diagnosis she received. More than a successful romance, I think this episode was a portrait of how people can find each other in the way that they need, which won’t look the same as it does for two other people but can be perfect nonetheless. I think my feelings about this second season are the same as they were about the first, which is that this show has potential but not every installment is a slam dunk. I like its overall style, however, and I wouldn’t mind checking out another set of love stories in season three.
