Emmy Catch-Up: Bridgerton

Every year, I watch the six submitted episodes of every series I don’t regularly watch that’s up for one of the Emmy series prizes. Last year, I started watching the entire season of each show to get a better idea of the quality I missed, and I’ve decided to continue that this year.

Bridgerton: Season 1, Episode 6 “Swish” (B+)

Every episode of this show seems to include so many developments and monumental changes, reminiscent most of an hour of “Downton Abbey” that manages to cover a great deal despite is perfectly ordinary length. Things did seem idyllic for Simon and Phoebe as they arrived at the estate, spending a great deal of time having sex and actually being very happy together. That changed quickly when Phoebe discovered herself to be a pariah because of her attempt to spare the lives of the pigs and Simon became obsessed with his work, ignoring her altogether, but it really took a turn when she was educated about how Simon’s apparent condition was not what he had described. What he shared with her was far from the full truth, and while she may have been okay with it then, there’s no going back now. Back at the Bridgerton home, despite Anthony’s objections to his younger brother getting married out of the normal line of order, things appeared to be on track for a union between Marina and Colin. The way Marina dismissed Penelope thinking of Colin’s wellbeing as jealousy and pettiness was harsh, and, though I doubt she was the one who shared Marina’s secret with Lady Whistledown, the truth came out and now that engagement is surely off. Two futures that seemed pretty set just recently are now in irreversible turmoil, and that doesn’t even count the forbidden, complicated romances that both Anthony and Benedict have previously begun to pursue and the absolute opposition to any conventional path that Eloise will continue to express.
