Royal Pains: Season 2, Episode 9 “Frenemies” (B+)
This dynamic between Hank and Emily is really fascinating. Her undressing at the end and telling him that they shouldn’t fight is a sign that she is a force to be reckoned with and that she’s perfectly fine manipulating Hank and stealing his clients. I imagine that she does have some true feelings for him, but at this point, it seems like she’s just using him and his fondness for her to take advantage of him and take away all of HankMed’s business. Getting Dr. Blair’s ex-husband to sign her as primary care physician is one thing, but going after part of Jill’s clinic is an entirely different matter. Dr. Blair is finally back after Marcia Gay Harden was initially touted as a major recurring guest star this season, despite barely appearing since the season premiere. Hopefully Jill can have some luck getting her clinic off the ground, because it’s certainly been a slow start thus far. Evan’s adventures were amusing, and it was fun to see Bob Gunton, recently seen as do-gooder Ethan Kanin on “24” but more famous as the evil warden in “The Shawshank Redemption,” as Paige’s intimidating father, who of course would be a general. It’s a good thing that Paige is finally starting to realize that Evan has real feelings for her (and that she might have feelings for him too). Everyone making fun of Evan getting shot is fine, but I have one small request: I’d prefer that Mark Feuerstein refrain from trying to giggle since it’s a tragic reminder that this man sometimes really isn’t a good actor at all.
