The Big C: Season 2, Episode 7 “Goldilocks and the Bears” (B+)
This was a wholly entertaining half hour, and a pretty powerful one at that too. I enjoyed Sean accompanying Cathy to her appointment and reading off the possible side effects before alienating the nurse and probably giving that random doctor a bit of a scare too. Lee calming Cathy was fun, as was the notion that he could be her soul mate, a concept about which she’s not terribly fond. It was amusing that Paul initially didn’t like Lee, and I absolutely love that he turned out to be Lee’s type, which meant that the three of them went to the bear bar together. Paul and Cathy learning the ins and outs of the bear world and Paul getting healed by a giant scantily-clad guy were highlights of their trip to the bar, and Paul thanking Lee for being Cathy’s cancer friend was sweet. It’s fun to see Andrea get nervous before her date that Adam tries to sabotage, and it’s nice that, though he’s terribly intimidated by her, Mick actually seems to be the right guy for Andrea, preferring everything in his life super-sized. Cathy’s time in the tub being coached by Lee was a more dramatic, optimism-fueled ending, and Marlene’s appearance was made entirely relevant by the notion that she’s a soul mate of sorts for Cathy. Her discovery of a lost fingernail, a sign that the drugs are working, is a magnificent triumph and a great win for Cathy, and for the moment, it looks like things are actually looking up.
