What I’m Watching: Falling Skies (Season Finale)

Falling Skies: Season 1, Episodes 9 & 10 “Mutiny” & “Eight Hours” (C-/C+)

There was absolutely no reason for this two-hour finale. The first hour didn’t deal with anything interesting, and for it to take forty-five minutes for the music to start up and the action to finally pick up is just ridiculous. Weaver being addicted to medication seems like an awfully convenient problem to suddenly become apparent, and I was most disgusted with how he snapped out of it just as suddenly when the time came. Pope considering Matt to be a princelet is stupid since the characters shouldn’t lend the Mason family the undue importance the show does. I’m glad that Maggie went on a mission with Hal since she’s been terribly underused this season. Scott jamming up skitter communications is a smart idea, and I like that it affected Ben and he wanted to help. In hour two, Rick crawling around on the ceiling and then hopping around like a leapfrog was a bit silly, and reporting every single thing to the aliens only to learn they don’t want him is awfully unfortunate. Not even seeing a legitimate alien until halfway through the second hour was disappointing, and though I got a chill when the celebration proved short-lived and a small army was still on the way, it ended pretty quickly without much excitement. Tom was bold enough to finally kiss Anne with less than twenty minutes left on the clock, and heading in to rescue Weaver was a heroic move. Taking a shot at the ship just to let the know he was there was cool, and it seems that he left more of an impression than he thought. Karen explaining that the aliens didn’t expect resistance on this level and find it interesting is a bit too cryptic to be satisfying, and hopefully Tom will come off the alien ship with a few more answers next season. I enjoyed his invocation of the battles of Lexington and Concord to rally the troops, and I generally enjoy this show’s campiness. Overall, however, this show didn’t deliver nearly enough this season, and I’m hopeful that season two will be far more fulfilling and action-packed.

Season grade: B-
Season MVP: Moon Bloodgood as Anne

I completely agree. I wanted a great new sci-fi show and falling skies didn't deliver. There is potential for the show, but the ending of the season was awful and full of conveniences to let the plot slowly move along
