What I’m Watching: Covert Affairs

Covert Affairs: Season 2, Episode 9 “Sad Professor” (B+)

It’s about time we delved more into Annie’s personal life in more way than one, giving her some connection to her pre-CIA days as well as finally having Danielle take a proactive role in trying to determine just what it is that’s keeping Annie so busy all the time. It’s intriguing to note how Arthur delivers the news of the agent’s death by comparing the casualties of the army and the police force to the low number of unnatural CIA deaths, 103. It makes sense that there would have been someone that recommended Annie for her CIA job, and her reaction to learning about her professor’s secret identity is perfectly understandable since, even after all the languages she speaks and all the missions she’s been on, she’s still rather naïve. Sending her to go tell the wife is a good assignment for her particular skill set, since she’s good at being relatable, and it also turns to be quite fortuitous since she’s the only one who doesn’t suspect his wife of being an enemy agent. Auggie helping Annie conduct her own investigation since she believes in the wife’s innocence is appreciated as always, and it’s nice to see their friendship continuing to blossom. Auggie meeting an overly curious Danielle was the highlight of the episode, particularly when he trumpeted the pillars of the CIA as if they were the pillars of the Smithsonian. I also liked his reaction when he learned about Scott, since Annie clearly neglected to mention that to him. Next week is the season finale – I wonder what major event this show will have in store for us.
