What I’m Watching: Covert Affairs (Summer Finale)
Covert Affairs: Season 2, Episode 10 “World Leader Pretend” (B+)
It’s about time Annie told someone in her non-professional life about what she does. After her early cop-out in the kitchen, I didn’t expect Annie to so easily come out with it, so her quick confession to her sister caught me by surprise. Kudos to Danielle, a generally wasted and annoying character, for not taking it lying down, immediately starting to pack up Annie’s stuff and then sticking to her guns later after they were back on good terms by telling her that she still wanted her gone. Danielle’s notion that Annie doesn’t need her or anyone else to protect her rings true, but that doesn’t mean Annie won’t be lonely. Things with Scott seem to have fizzled, which is a shame, but she’ll always have Auggie, who has a friend everywhere and doesn’t seem to be the least bit miffed at Annie when he gets arrested after his friend betrays him. Annie’s mission in this episode played out well, starting with a cool scene walking through the kitchen nice and steady, and leading to the demise of her informant and the use of his information to implicate and ultimately catch his supposed friend. I was thrilled that Arthur took a stand and made sure that the folks at State backed off Joan, showing considerably more panache and intimidating power than usual. Jai doesn’t seem happy at all, and it looks like this underused character isn’t going to take his Phoenix fate lying down, which should prove interesting. Now in its sophomore season, this show is entitled to a bonus round of winter episodes, so look for five more installments sometime later this season, probably in January.
Season grade so far: B+
Season MVP: Christopher Gorham
