Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Directing for a Drama Series

Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order by show. Beware of minor spoilers for listed episodes.

Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire (Pilot)
Jeremy Podeswa, Boardwalk Empire (Anastasia)
Neil Jordan, The Borgias (The Poisoned Chalice/The Assassin)
Tim Van Patten, Game of Thrones (Winter is Coming)
Patty Jenkins, The Killing (Pilot)

Interestingly enough, a pilot has not won this award since “Lost” back in 2005. That’s going to change this year since all five nominees are episodes from new series, and four of them are pilots. The frontrunner is definitely Martin Scorsese for the debut episode of HBO’s new prohibition series. Another HBO pilot was directed by Emmy veteran Tim Van Patten, who has won two Emmys for helming “Sex and the City” and picked up another four nods for “The Sopranos.” Neil Jordan is an Oscar winner for “The Crying Game,” and while that counts for something, I don’t think that “The Borgias” can upset any of the other nominated shows in this category. “The Killing” did alright with nominations but won’t be able to overcome HBO, and there’s very little chance that the other episode of “Boardwalk Empire” will win here.

What should win: “Anastasia”
What will win: “Pilot” (Boardwalk Empire)
