Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Writing for a Drama Series

Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order by show. Beware of minor spoilers for listed episodes.

Jason Katims, Friday Night Lights (Always)
David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Game of Thrones (Baelor)
Veena Sud, The Killing (Pilot)
André & Maria Jacquemetton, Mad Men (Blowing Smoke)
Matthew Weiner, Mad Men (The Suitcase)

If there was ever a frontrunner here, it would be Matthew Weiner, who has taken home this award the past three years running for penning episodes of “Mad Men.” While it’s possible that the game-changing “Blowing Smoke” could prevail, I think that “The Suitcase” is the show’s best bet. Watch out for “Baelor,” which ends with a shocking execution, since it’s definitely an intense episode. There’s also the series finale of “Friday Night Lights” and the series premiere of “The Killing,” both of which pack an emotional punch and could earn some love.

What should win: “Blowing Smoke”
What will win: “The Suitcase”

Next up: Best Directing for a Comedy Series

I would actually love it if the Friday Night Lights finale won here. After a month watching the whole show, I found that finale quite satisfying as well as tear-inducing. Everything about it was just perfect. Abe, I really think you should go back to the beginning there because there are certain things about this finale that probably didn't work for you if you didn't see the whole show. The return of Tyra for example, she was one of my favorite characters in the first three season and then left for college, so it was great to see her back and to re-kindle her romance with Tim Riggins (even if I liked her better with Landry), and I don't know how much Matt proposing to Julie meant to you. Anyway, a month with that show really allows you to make an emotional connection to the show.

As for Mad Men, I also prefer Blowing Smoke, though I personally would have nominated The Beautiful Girls (the strongest episode of the season in my opinion). The Suitcase is still a fantastic episode. Although, after Boardwalk Empire's near sweep at the Creative Emmys and Mad Men only managing to pick up one, I wonder what the support is for Mad Men this season. I really want it to win some acting Emmys more than anything, but we'll see what happens next week (Game of Thrones would be a great winner too).
