What I’m Watching: Rescue Me

Rescue Me: Season 7, Episode 8 “Vows” (B+)

It’s crazy to believe that we only have one episode left in the entire history of this series, as we’re fast approaching the tenth anniversary of September 11th. Only on this show could a wedding be filled with such unfiltered horrible remarks, with Sean, Mike, and everyone else making Mexican jokes and Tommy telling Black Shawn’s parents that he thought his grandchildren might come out purple. The wedding ceremony itself actually went off pretty well, and it was only when Sheila starting giving her champagne-inspired toast that things really took a nosedive. I was highly entertained by the vows Tommy had to agreed to during the vow renewal ceremony, and I like that Katie encouraged him to quit active duty by telling him she’s going to start drinking and become a prostitute. The many raised hands at the question of any objections were funny, and I’m glad that Mickey chose to skip right over that part. It was fun to see the Gavin family back together again, with Teddy, Maggie, and Mickey all present for the family meeting in which they planned to get drunk solely on champagne. It’s sweet that Sean proposed to his girlfriend despite Mike’s ridiculous advice, and I’m hopeful that it works out, even if we won’t have the chance to see that wedding. The entire to the episode was intense, and I have to imagine that at least some of them don’t survive this. I can’t believe that Tommy is going to walk away fine from everything and really retire to desk duty, but dying also seems like too much of an easy way out. Either way, I’ll be watching the eighty-minute finale next week, and I’m sure it’s going to be a doozy.
