Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Directing for a Comedy Series

Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order by show. Beware of minor spoilers for listed episodes.

Pamela Fryman, How I Met Your Mother (Subway Wars)
Michael Spiller, Modern Family (Halloween)
Steven Levitan, Modern Family (See You Next Fall)
Gail Mancuso, Modern Family (Slow Down Your Neighbors)
Beth McCarthy-Miller, 30 Rock (Live Show)

This is the first directing nomination for all except for Beth McCarthy-Miller, who has been nominated six times before but never won. Historically, shows with multiple nominations have lost more other than they’ve won, though they are several exceptions. This is the first directing big for HIMYM, in the same year that star Neil Patrick Harris is snubbed. The idea of that episode, which involves a race to find the best way to get around New York City to a set destination, is undeniably fun. All three “Modern Family” installments are enjoyable, though the best staged one is probably “Halloween,” while the other two boast better writing. “Live Show” is a decently clever and somewhat innovative installment of “30 Rock” that could well bring the show its first win in this category.

What should win: “Halloween” or “Slow Down Your Neighbors”
What will win: I think that the buzz right now is for “Modern Family,” so I’ll pick ”Halloween” over “Live Show.”

I actually think the Picture Editing win for Subway Wars gives it a chance for a directing win (despite the Harris snub), but I am rooting for a Modern Family win here. Especially because I really want it to win a second Comedy Series Emmy, and I think they'll want to give it a few other Emmys. I do think it will be Halloween (since it is the more popular episode with the Emmys, apparently, and a very good episode). Anyway, we'll know on Sunday.
