What I’m Watching: Shameless

Shameless: Season 8, Episode 5 “The (Mis)Education of Liam Fergus Beircheart Gallagher” (B+)

I don’t even know where to start here since there were so many superb plotlines featured in this episode. Carl losing his scholarship and trying to figure out how to make money, like stealing other Uber drivers’ passengers and cleaning out the trap in the restaurant, was entertaining, and I love that the guy he held prisoner in his basement was so impressed with his forceful detox process that he has a whole line of customers to bring him. Frank got another promotion and now wants to get with the moms in Liam’s class, and somehow he seemed like the less depraved one when one of them kept wanting him to touch her with his dirty hands while they were having sex. Liam failing his test in typical Gallagher style turned into a hilarious uprooting of the entire system thanks to Frank’s complaints about cultural bias. Derek showing up with his new girlfriend really threw Debs for a loop, and let’s hope that partying hard is going to be the worst part of her reaction. Brad falling off the wagon is bad news, but at least a smacked-around Lip isn’t losing sight of what he has to hold on to in all this. I loved Kev using all these Southern phrases that he doesn’t understand, and none of that could keep Svetlana from seducing Veronica while he went out for a few minutes and keeping her fifty percent stake in the bar. Him asking the colored part of collard greens was just racism was my favorite line. Throughout this whole episode, I kept thinking that Fiona and Ian should really talk to each other since they were going after the same property, and now that they know, I think it’s going to be full-on war, with Fiona on an unexpectedly gentrified side.
