Golden Globe Musings: Best Actor in a TV Series - Comedy/Musical

Golden Globe nominations for this year will be announced soon, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anyone important. A reminder that last year’s nominees mean zilch at the Globes and that the race is almost entirely unpredictable.

Last year’s nominees:
Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)
Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle)
Donald Glover (Atlanta)
Nick Nolte (Graves)
Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)

New contenders:
Hank Azaria (Brockmire)
Keir Gilchrist (Atypical)

Potential first-time nominees:
Ted Danson (The Good Place)
Zach Galifianakis (Baskets)

Returning series:
Aziz Ansari (Master of None)
Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)
Eric McCormack (Will and Grace)

Past nominees:
William H. Macy (Shameless)

The number of contenders who have been nominated in the past but whose shows have been off the air for two, six, or eleven years stands at four, and, sadly, I don’t think my favorite - and the only one who has actually won - stands a chance for the final season of his show. I’d say that Ansari and McCormack are locked, David is possible, and LeBlanc is unlikely. The only spot left wide open is that of last year’s winner Glover, whose show isn’t back until 2018. I’d be truly shocked if Nolte got nominated again, and Bernal is a toss-up. Anderson is very likely, and I’m taking Tambor out after the recent allegations against him that have led to his departure from the show. Rounding out the list, much as I’d love to see Gilchrist or Danson, I think Azaria is a safer bet.

Current predictions:
Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)
Aziz Ansari (Master of None)
Hank Azaria (Brockmire)
Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
Eric McCormack (Will and Grace)
