What I’m Watching: The Good Wife

The Good Wife: Season 5, Episode 16 “The Last Call” (B)

I’m still not fully behind the big twist of last week, but I do think that this episode helped to pick up the pieces in a moving way. I wasn’t enthralled by Alicia’s focus on that last call she received from Will since it seemed like somewhat of an artificial device, and all it does is create some separation between Alicia and Peter because she was so distraught by his death and his presence only makes it worse. That final imagined moment was truly intense, and it’s going to be a difficult road going forward for Alicia with the eternal question of whether she could have had something with Will based on that final conversation they never had the chance to have. A therapeutic conversation with his slightly delirious opposing counsel helped to some degree, thanks in part to a dedicated performance by guest star Matthew Goode. Kalinda was able to get her revenge in a way, with some assistance from one of her past romantic interests. Diane was understandably distraught by Will’s death, which was even more unsettling than Alicia since she so rarely shows emotion, with the exception of when she didn’t get the judgeship after Alicia left the firm. After a moment of pent-up tear-shedding, David Lee did what everyone else was thinking and only he and Eli were doing. Diane firing the client that demanded to meet with her that day and telling him that she had ruined his prospects of going anywhere else was fantastic, and hopefully a sign of what’s to come in her new role as the sole captain of the firm.
