What I’m Watching: Justified

Justified: Season 5, Episode 12 “Starvation” (B+)

This has been an extraordinarily involving season, and given the wealth of new characters introduced, it’s understandable that there needs to be an exit strategy so that they’re not all around for the show’s sixth and final season next year. Danielle Panabaker’s Penny is the one to make an exit in this hour, which is probably a fine thing since I’m not sure it’s worthwhile for Ava to spend another year in prison and for the show to devote a good portion of its screen time to that. Raylan coming to see Ava to offer her a deal in exchange for helping him was a perfect way to resolve it, but that of course didn’t pan out. It’s strange to think that, way back in season two, the two of them were involved in a relationship. Raylan is really playing hardball now, trying to get Kendal tried as an adult to guilt Daryl into confessing to his complicity and exonerating his nephew. Adding some comic relief, Dewey did a great job of bursting it at just the right moment to admit his crimes when he wasn’t even supposed to be recorded on tape. Wynn and Boyd are going to have a tough time staying alive even with their considerable police cooperation, and I suspect that the finale is going to be relatively explosive. I like that Boyd tried to reveal Raylan's involvement in Nicky’s death only to find out that Rachel and Tim considered the case closed and weren’t interested in what he had to say.
