What I’m Watching: House of Lies

House of Lies: Season 3, Episode 11 “Together” (B-)

In the wake of the violent ending to last week’s episode, this installment dialed back its pace to showcase Marty and Jeannie in a shell-shocked state. It was always true that Lucas was a more interesting character than Dre, with the one exception of Dre hiring someone to pretend to be an agent of Lucas’ who wanted to poach him. With Lucas dead, that means all we have left is Dre, who suddenly turns into a ruthless gangster who had his partner killed and was bold enough to make that decision with his wife, who was far from threatened when Marty told her that he knew that Dre had hired the hit. Jeannie’s missing tooth was an odd outcome of the crossfire, and her dental visit was off-putting. It’s been a long time since Marty and Jeannie got crazy drunk in the season one finale, and to have it take almost two full seasons for them to rekindle what shouldn’t even be described as romance is a bit ridiculous. Marty telling Jeannie he loves her was intense, and definitely something he’ll regret. Meanwhile, Doug’s efforts to win Sarah back haven’t been entirely noble, but it’s also important to remember that she is legitimately crazy and did trick him into marrying her by proposing to herself. Clyde’s relationship isn’t working out too well either, and in this case you can’t really blame him since Marissa did screw him over completely by selling her company. Her revelation about his personal life was also an enormous blow.
