What I’m Watching: The Red Road (Season Finale)

The Red Road: Season 1, Episode 6 “Snaring of the Sun” (B+)

It’s the mark of any good finale to have a flashback to a moment in time that has been immensely central to the events of a season. It wasn’t clear just how big a role Harold had in the events surrounding Brian’s disappearance, and that helps to add considerable context to Jean’s ensuing mental state and everything that happened to Philip as a result of him being wrongly positioned as the last one to have seen Brian alive. Harold giving the tape recording to Jean was bold but noble, and it definitely changes things. Her going to find Philip and then passionately kissing him before getting him angry by acknowledging that she knew that he wasn’t involved in her brother’s death was quite unexpected, and a very enlightening interaction between two characters we have so far gotten to know only separately. What happened after that was intense, and ended the season on a very memorable note. Jack carjacking the police officer and showing up guns blazing to kill Philip didn’t result in anyone except for the cop getting hurt, but unfortunately Junior saved the day by pulling the trigger on Jack just as the police were arriving to witness it. We don’t know what will become of Junior, but Harold didn’t waste much time in taking out his aggression at Philip after he goaded him into it by telling about his visit to Harold’s house. It seemed like Harold was going to let Philip be taken away to certain dismemberment and death, and instead what we got was a furious finish that further unites Harold and Philip. This first season showed enormous potential, and I would be interested to see Sundance pick up a second season.

Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Jason Mamoa as Philip
