Psych: Season 5, Episode 13 “We’d Like to Thank the Academy” (B+)
I’d first like to point out that this show’s title is terrific. I feel like this show is clever in so many ways that it doesn’t even get credit for since it’s sometimes so subtle. Of course, other times it’s not nearly as low-key, and this is one of those instances, where Shawn and Gus get to make big, overt fools of themselves while taking someone else down with them and managing to inexplicably save the day in the end. I had imagined that Lassiter would end up being the substitute rather than Juliet, but I suppose the detective doesn’t even want to associate himself with the academy. It was certainly entertaining seeing a uniformed Shawn and Gus (I could stop there) pull over Lassiter and try to embarrass him before he jetted off to a crime scene. The fact that it’s taken the Chief this long to enroll her most distracting consultants in the police academy is somewhat surprising, but given just how little they learned and how much trouble they caused, I suppose it makes sense. This episode didn’t have the most engaging storyline apart from the time spent in the academy by Shawn and Gus, but it’s hard for an episode of this show not to work, or at least to not be extremely entertaining. I do want to see more of the relationship between Shawn and Juliet since that has been almost completely absent for two whole episodes now, and I especially want to see what happens when Lassiter gets wind of their romance.
