What I’m Watching: The Big C

The Big C: Season 2, Episode 6 “The Little C” (B+)

This is a terrific episode for all involved, even though things get somewhat unpleasant with most of the members of the Jameson family by its end. Cathy’s decision to become a swim coach is perfectly in line with the way that she’s been living her life in a more productive, spontaneous way since finding out about her cancer, and it’s a shame that it doesn’t work out because her effective coaching method offends some parents and results in them wanting to get rid of her. Adam getting crabs is rather unfortunate, and I like how Sean was the one to break the news to him after inspecting his penis. Cathy’s accidental breaking of the news to Mia was a cringe-inducing development, but Adam really deserves for everyone to know what a jerk he is, especially after he plays the sick mom card only when she wants to break up with him. The blow-up fight between Adam and his parents has been a long time coming, but good for them for not taking his cruel criticisms lying down and for laying into him for his behavior. The impressive speech award for this episode goes to Paul, who truly skewers his boss for his racist remarks, which results in him wetting himself and giving Mick the job he wanted. It’s fun to see Andrea and Mick hit it off so well, and though she’s definitely going to be more than this guy can handle, I’m always happy to see some new recurring characters.
