What I’m Watching: True Blood

True Blood: Season 4, Episode 6 “I Wish I Was the Moon” (B+)

This episode feels a bit like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with a definitive supernatural twist, as creatures literally wander through the woods and encounter each other as others are entranced as they may be by witches and necromancers. The fire at Arlene and Terry’s, coupled with the continued presence of that creepy doll, was peculiar enough, and then there was Tommy shifting into Sam and having some wild experiences of his life before passing out on the floor and maybe even vomiting to death. Freaky things are going on with Jesus and Lafayette in a way that’s not clearly relevant, and I’m not sure why Tara and her girlfriend have to be the victims of Pam’s decomposing rage, especially after their reconciliation in Bon Temps this episode. While Marnie being possessed by the witch burned at the stake might seem random, I like how it connects immediately to Luis charging into the cell to confront her, only to be put under her spell, which should have unfortunate implications next episode. Alcide’s role in everything isn’t quite obvious at this point, but it’s fun to have him and Debbie run into Sookie in the woods, especially for the informative value of the meeting in terms of Jason’s non-werepanther status. I enjoyed seeing Jason confide in Sookie and then have him run off into the woods only to be found by Jessica. Their relationship is one of the best this show has produced, and I like how Jason added some comedy in by focusing on Jessica’s breasts to calm himself down. There was great music at the start of the episode as Eric and Sookie were getting hot and heavy, and boy did Bill rush in there fast to stop the fun. Bill saying that his life doesn’t revolve around what’s between Sookie’s legs was rather cruel, as was his suggestion that, for once in her life, she should stay out of it. Amnesiac Eric is a fascinating character, so loyal to King Bill and not eager to get his vampire life back, perfectly fine dying the true death given what he’s heard about his former self. There’s nothing like sex in the grass between this show’s newest hot couple to end the episode.
