What I’m Watching: Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad: Season 4, Episode 3 “Open House” (B+)

In many ways, this episode was considerably brighter than usual, with Walt actually interacting with people outside of the lab and the bar. After starting with him stewing as he drank his coffee with a black eye and gave the finger to the camera, Skyler arrived at his home, demanding to be heard and stealing the episode. I was surprised that Walt was actually fairly honest about what happened with Mike, sparing her the finer details, but what really mattered to her was getting the car wash. It’s so interesting to see Walt panic and get nervous before ultimately trying to take credit for having faith while Skyler was the more patient, plotting one. Her earpiece instructions and lowball tactics worked extraordinarily well, and she seems determined not to let sloppiness on anyone’s part get her in trouble, barring any $300 wine bottles from being purchased in the future. It was rather disconcerting in this episode to see Marie going around town looking for a new house, making up a separate lie at each home, since she’s the only character on this show who had always been, if anything, far too honest at all times. Her vice and subsequent arrest paves the way for Tim to come and ask Hank for a favor, which involves taking a look at Gale’s notebook. I’m hopeful that this is going to get Hank back on his feet and throw a wrench into the way that things have been going under the radar thus far, making this season just as intense as the one before it.
