What I’m Watching: Wilfred

Wilfred: Season 1, Episode 7 “Pride” (B+)

Every time Ryan manages to get himself into a tiny bit of trouble, Wilfred is there to make sure he digs himself into a hole too deep from which to escape. Asking Kristen for money would be hard enough since she would give him endless lectures on how irresponsible she is, but causing a car crash hardly seems like a better option. That’s the brilliance of Wilfred functioning in the human world – he isn’t able to fully think things through and thus acts impulsively, putting all the blame on Ryan’s shoulders. Of course, he doesn’t fully throw Ryan to the wind, giving him the idea of seducing Beth to avoid having to pay her for the damage to her car. He also helped Ryan out in a major way by paying Beth a visit in the middle of the night, getting him off the hook for not delivering sexually. Jane Kaczmarek was fun as the crazy Beth, and I enjoyed her final line, where she declared that she was trying to negotiate a signing bonus. Having her son come in and catch Ryan defiling the poor stuffed giraffe was a great way to close that arc. Wilfred’s affection for the giraffe and the bear is one of the most amusing parts of this show. Most entertaining, however, is the way in which he wins games such as Monopoly, by knocking over the table and/or hitting Ryan and taking the money, declaring victory for himself despite considerable evidence to the contrary.
