Californication: Season 6, Episode 11 “The Abby” (B+)
This show has absolutely no morals, and that’s one of the best things about it. It also helps it to complete what may be Showtime’s smartest Sunday night lineup ever with a superb slate of similar shows. Hank and Faith enlisting the help of the ever-kissable Bates to sneak drugs into rehab in order to corrupt Atticus into returning to his old self was twisted but hilarious, and convincing Gabriel to let his guard down and embrace the drug-addled fun was a sure sign of an unfortunate, irreversible descent for him. I enjoyed Becca’s participation in the attempt to steer Atticus onto the wrong path again, assisted by a helpful tip from Hank on her favorite song of his. I’m glad that all this business with Ophelia is finally done, and what a way for it to end, with the certifiably crazy woman tasing both Marcy and Charlie and then getting a masterful lecture about taking feminism way too far from an angry Marcy. It’s wonderful to see Marcy and Charlie back together again, and only they could be okay with the idea of ordained minister Atticus marrying them on tour. Becca’s departure for her literary pilgrimage abroad was an effective goodbye to a character who has been only tangential to the storyline recently, and who may very well return by the time season seven begins. Her new boyfriend really isn’t making the best impression on Hank, but at least he managed to spare himself a punch to the face this time in their latest humorous interaction.
