Justified: Season 4, Episode 12 “Peace of Mind” (B+)
In a season that has mostly allowed him to play a supporting role to events, this was a superb episode for Raylan to reassert himself. After a rare chance to see Natalie Zea, moonlighting from her series regular role on “The Following,” as Claire, who broke the news about the baby’s gender to Raylan, he had an awesome moment with Art in which he casually challenged the timing of his suspension to afford him the opportunity to continue working on the case. Shelby’s desire to get protection for Ellen May added a whole new layer of competition to another search, one which proved crowded and was ultimately won by the law. Nick and Boyd’s latest interaction was great, highlighted by Nick’s quip that he would need Google Translate on his phone if he kept talking to Boyd, and it was reassuring to hear him apologize to Ava, who sprung into action to get things done. It’s probably a good thing that she couldn’t kill Ellen May and Cassie, and it allowed Colt to go out with style. In his usual subdued way, Tim was only concerned with Colt having killed his friend, and he fired that decisive bullet that took down the drug addict, who was clearly ready to go after one last cigarette. With Shelby and Ellen May in custody, it looks like everything is pretty much in order, but that final scene is extremely disconcerting. Picker’s delivery of a rocking chair for Winona foreshadows some sinister plan on Nick’s part, one which I hope doesn’t prove deadly or devastating for Raylan’s new family.
