House of Lies: Season 2, Episode 11 “Hostile Takeover” (B+)
Marty is paving the way for a powerful launch of his new company, but he’s not making friends on the road there. Making the shot with Carlson in the middle of the desert was a big get, but of course he instead left the obnoxious billionaire stranded and pitched the exact same thing to his number one competition, their original client, Pincus. As if Carlson weren’t irritating enough, the Dushkin twins are outright unbearable, and it’s a wonder that Clyde managed to reel them back in after their ill-conceived cologne idea. I’m intrigued by Sarah, who seems to be fully smitten with Doug and intent on concocting a fake friendship with a completely uninterested Jeannie to please her beau, and I do hope that she’s not merely stringing him along for some sinister purpose. It’s good to know that Marty’s whole pod is going to be included in his new venture, which was ominously introduced in the episode’s final moments. Tamara didn’t get a happy ending, netting herself a new job but a brutal excommunication from Marty. Julianne Hotschragar is one fearsome woman, and I’m not sure I’ve taken the time to appropriately praise actress Bess Armstrong for her excellent performance. It was extremely sad to see Nate protest to Jeannie that she really shouldn’t break up with him when, once again, she was ruining something perfectly wonderful in her life because she simply can’t stand to be settled down and seemingly happy, not sure of what’s to come next.
