Justified: Season 4, Episode 13 “Ghosts” (B+)
This episode was considerably more subtle and death-free than much of the rest of this season, though that’s not to say that it doesn’t contain its share of bloodshed. Raylan and Winona did a formidable job of taking down the henchmen sent to ensure that Raylan helped lead them to Shelby with Winona remaining at home as a hostage. I’m glad that they didn’t succeed in enlisting Raylan’s forced cooperation, and instead he went ahead and dealt with the problem in a more creative way. Nicky proved to be this season’s truly compelling villain, fascinated by the idea of meeting Raylan and set on the idea of going after Raylan’s family purely so that his underlings will comprehend that he follows through on his threats. Raylan calling Sammy to come take out Nicky and then walking away while his car was being riddled with bullets was an intense end to that particular saga, and it looks like next season is going to have to revolve around something other than thugs from Detroit. Unfortunately, things couldn’t have ended in a more devastating manner than they did for Boyd, who wasn’t present to get arrested but instead had to suffer the fate of being betrayed by those he thought he was manipulating and see Ava end up behind bars. I suspect we’ll be seeing a much darker, more vindictive Boyd next season, and after a year like this that was constantly headed in unknown directions, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for season five.
Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Patton Oswalt as Constable Bob
