SAG Predictions: Best Male Actor in a Drama Series

Last year’s nominees: Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards).

The rundown: Just one of these nominees is guaranteed not to be back this year, and that’s Cranston, whose show is over. Most would probably count out Buscemi, but given that he’s been nominated every year so far while both Emmy voters and Golden Globe voters have cast him aside, I see no reason why he wouldn’t be back again for the final year of his show. That same logic applies to a lesser extent to Daniels, competing for the third and last time. The problem is that the other two nominees from last year, Dinklage and Spacey, are much safer bets, and there are two strong contenders who I suspect will both be nominated together: Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (True Detective), eligible in this race here while their show is considered a miniseries at the Golden Globes. Given that he’s the only element of his show that’s ever been recognized, I think Daniels is the weak link. Watch out for Clive Owen (The Knick) as another possible spoiler.

Current predictions: Buscemi, Dinklage, Harrelson, McConaughey, Spacey
