What I’m Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 2, Episode 7 “Hella Disrepectful” (B+)

It was inevitable that Issa and Lawrence would see each other again, but for it to happen in such a closed space full of people where Lawrence didn’t realize he was bringing a date to a seated dinner party made it extremely awkward. Issa was pretty full of rage in this episode, first lashing out at Daniel when he called with what turned out not to be much of an apology and then laying into Lawrence for bringing someone to the dinner and for blocking her. They both said things they probably didn’t mean, but somehow Lawrence’s came off as harsher and even more unforgivable. It was good to see Issa take a stand against the principal for the Latino population at school after realizing that the club was being marketed as full despite a great need for the community, and, despite a harsh initial reaction from Frieda, they’re back on the same page too and united together. Molly just doesn’t seem to be able to quit Dro, and being too close for comfort to his marriage didn’t do much to deter her, as evidenced by their passionate rendezvous. I feel like there may not be some big blowup coming, and that this romance continuing with no acknowledgment that it’s evolved into something Molly won’t be able to walk away from is going to hurt even more. This is the second-to-last episode of the season, but fortunately this show has already been renewed for a third season, which means we’ll get to see plenty more of Issa and friends navigating their way through life and love.
