Psych: Season 4, Episode 4 “The Devil’s in the Details…and in the Upstairs” (C+)
This is now at least the third or fourth time that “Psych” has opted for a supernatural, horror-themed episode rather than the more traditional someone-was-murdered comedy route. This particular show does excel at parody and near-perfect recreations of classic horror movie scenes with a pretty impressive comedic touch. I, for one, am not a big fan of horror films, and therefore this episode wasn’t terribly exciting for me, and I feel like the obsessive need to reproduce a scene frame-for-frame takes away from the general brilliance and hilarity of the episode. The ultimate solution of the case wasn’t too surprising, and the ride along the way was just peculiar rather than decently thrilling. The one part of the episode that I did absolutely love was the casting of Ray Wise as Gus’ old priest. Perhaps it’s even more fantastically inappropriate because he just played the devil on “Reaper,” but his shady smile and incomparable kindly attitude was fantastic and absolutely perfect for this show. The opening scene with Shawn’s explanation of the illogical nature of Noah’s Ark was pretty darn funny, especially for the reactions of his father and the priest, and ranks among the best of the always-terrific 1989 flashbacks.
