Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order.
Brenda Blethyn, “Law & Order: SVU”
Carol Burnett, “Law & Order: SVU”
Ellen Burstyn, “Law & Order: SVU”
Sharon Lawrence, “Grey’s Anatomy”
CCH Pounder, “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency”
Of all these ladies, only one of them has an Emmy – and she has a bunch. Carol Burnett has been a TV presence for decades, and her serious role could garner her a win in a different category than her usual fare. Three out of the past four years, the winner in this category has been from “Law & Order: SVU.” Brenda Blethyn isn’t as well known, and that may hurt her, and she doesn’t have nearly as showy a role as Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, who played Detective Stabler’s unstable mother. Last year’s winner, Cynthia Nixon, portrayed a woman with multiple personalities – that could be just what Emmy voters are looking for again. Sharon Lawrence’s role as Izzie’s mother wasn’t terribly serious, and I doubt that voters would crown CCH Pounder the winner for a show no one has heard of (I haven’t even been able to find her episode) after not rewarding her for her nominated work on “The Shield,” “ER,” and “The X-Files.”
Who should win: Brenda Blethyn
Who will win: My best is that the baity role Ellen Burstyn had will ultimately win over Emmy voters, though TV legend Carol Burnett could upset.
