Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order.
Alan Alda, “30 Rock”
Beau Bridges, “Desperate Housewives”
Jon Hamm, “30 Rock”
Steve Martin, “30 Rock”
Justin Timberlake, “Saturday Night Live”
In past years, voters have rewarded actors for their broad, energetic comedic performances. This year, no nominee really fits that pill. Steve Martin was relatively sedated in an episode people didn’t really seem to like. Jon Hamm isn’t terribly active either, but his good-looking-man arc was popular. Alan Alda is a legendary Emmy champ, and his good-natured performance as Jack’s kidney-seeking Democratic father may win over his fans. Justin Timberlake’s chances are difficult to gauge because he’s not necessarily a true actor and is up for his hosting job on a variety series, and this category hasn’t been a home to that type of performer before. I think voters will act like they did last year, when they gave past Emmy winner Tim Conway the award for a lackluster performance on “30 Rock,” and reward Beau Bridges, whose story-anchoring nice-guy-plumber spot on “Desperate Housewives” was considered by many to be the high point of that show’s season.
Who should win: Steve Martin or Jon Hamm
Who will win: It could be anyone in this bunch, but I think the heavy favorite will be Beau Bridges.
