Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Writing in a Drama Series

Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order.

Lost , “The Incident” (Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof)
Mad Men, “The Jet Set” (Matthew Weiner)
Mad Men, “Meditations in an Emergency” (Kater Gordon & Matthew Weiner)
Mad Men, “A Night to Remember” (Robin Veith & Matthew Weiner)
Mad Men, “Six Month Leave” (Andre Jacquemetton, Marie Jacquemetton & Matthew Weiner)

Vote-splitting logic might dictate that Lost would prevail as the lone nominee from a show besides Mad Men. While the two-hour season finale was quite a tour de force, history has shown that when a show has four of five writing nods, it always wins. “The Sopranos” did it three times – 1999, 2001, and 2004 – and each time, it won. Predicting which “Mad Men” installment will be crowned the victor is a bit tougher. Directing and writing don’t usually match up, so “The Jet Set” may not prevail here. It will probably be either the season finale, “Meditations in an Emergency,” or the most moving episode of “Mad Men” this season, “Six Month Leave.” I’ll go with the latter.

Who should win: “The Jet Set”
Who will win: “Six Month Leave”
