Emmy Winner Predictions: Best Writing in a Comedy Serie

Nominees are pictured and listed in alphabetical order.

Flight of the Conchords, “Prime Minister” (James Bobin, Jemaine Clement & Bret McKenzie)
30 Rock, “Apollo, Apollo” (Jack Burditt & Robert Carlock)
30 Rock, “Kidney Now!” (Millicent Shelton)
30 Rock, “Mamma Mia” (Ron Weiner)
30 Rock, “Reunion” (Matt Hubbard)

While it’s happened many times before in the drama writing category, this is the first time in at least the past 25 years that four out of five of the nominees have come from one show. It’s probably fair to discount two of the nominees outright: “Prime Minister” because Flight of the Conchords will likely have more success in the directing race, and “Kidney Now” because it’s a guest-star parade episode that doesn’t really show off much writing skill. It’s a bit more difficult to determine which episode of 30 Rock will ultimately take home the prize here, but I doubt it will be “Mamma Mia,” even though that was, in my opinion, the cleverest episode nominated. It’s down to “Reunion” and “Apollo, Apollo,” and while “Reunion” is a great showcase for Tina Fey, “Apollo, Apollo” seems to be immensely popular and, even though I seem not to agree with voters’ choices of best “30 Rock” episodes, it looks like Jack’s birthday celebration will get more than just a cake.

Who should win: “Mamma Mia”
Who will win: “Apollo, Apollo”

Next up: Best Drama Series
