What I’m Watching: 2 Broke Girls

2 Broke Girls: Season 1, Episode 13 “And the Secret Ingredient” (B+)

It’s just one day after the start of the New Year, and this show and its waitress protagonists are already back. It’s crazy that it’s taken this long for newly broke Caroline to discover the wonder of coupons. I’m curious as a New York City resident whether buying forty boxes of Ducnan Hines cake mix actually results in a $23 refund and no cost to the buyer, and if that’s the case, I’m going to get on that right away. This episode was one of the first to multitask, planning a visit for the girls to their favorite horse and also enabling Max to champion the cause of stabilizing tampon prices, which caused Han considerable discomfort and gave Oleg a rare opportunity to help support Max and Caroline. I was worried when they first mentioned that they were going to see Chestnut that incorporating the horse so soon, or rather, immediately, following his departure might be an unwise movie, but instead it just permitted Max to make plenty of cracks about the Lifetime movie version of their lives and joke about texting with Chestnut. Like most of the things which Caroline gets into, like dressing up and working on Christmas, she hit rock bottom midway through, refusing to allow Max to purchase the necessary store-bought ingredients to mix together to create her supposedly homemade cupcakes. Ultimately, however, everything worked out fine, so perhaps it’s better just to think of it as a passing phase which helped Caroline grow as a broke person.
