Parenthood: Season 3, Episode 13 “Just Smile” (B+)
One thing that the newly-begun partnership between Crosby and Adam hadn’t previously given us was a conflict about which of them took their business more seriously, since Crosby knows music but Adam was always the one with the smart business sense. The interview did a marvelous job of driving a wedge between the two of them, alienating Crosby by devaluing his sense of himself. Fortunately, Courtney Ford, alumna of “Dexter” and "True Blood,” just happened to stop by as devoted cellist Lily, which was especially wonderful since her previous roles haven’t allowed her the opportunity to be so dry and sarcastic, speaking perfectly in line with the rest of the dialogue on this show, natural and rarely smoothly constructed. I’m excited about that impending romance, and I’m glad that Crosby has someone on whom to focus his attention. Max’s expression of support for Adam was sweet, and it’s nice to see Adam be affirmed in his newly begun job after his summer of unemployment. Sarah’s desire to have Mark included in the poker game presented some hilarity, as well as the opportunity for the girls to get together and tell Sarah to talk to Mark about this baby business. Troy calling Zoe was the catalyst for some self-control on Julia’s part, and some unexpected maturity from both Troy and Zoe, leading to the papers being officially signed. Amber being far more honest than her fellow interns, all but one of whom were Ivy League grads, is a treat because it gives her something productive to do and turns Kristina’s candidate Jonathan Tucker into an interesting character.
