What I’m Watching: Hell on Wheels

Hell on Wheels: Season 1, Episode 8 “Derailed” (B+)

During its one-week hiatus, this show got renewed for a second season, which is truly exciting since it doesn’t show any signs of settling down, constantly putting its primary characters in the middle of dangerous situations and never letting them rest for more than a moment. This episode started out quite memorably with the derailed train, and just kept going from there. Cullen gave the Swede quite a beating, which was the first time we’ve really seen him let someone else get the better of him. His efforts to prove that Cullen is a criminal and a murderer, however rooted in truth, are beginning to seem desperate, and Durant doesn’t care one bit. He was, however, quite offended by Lily not accepting his marriage proposal, telling her that she could carry her own bags and only going to attempt to apologize much later. The bonding between Eva and Lily is quite intriguing, and it’s nice to see both women making friends. Elam and Cullen are now thick as thieves, doing their best to protect Joseph on the hunt for Indian blood as Griggs has difficulty keeping his temper in check. Cullen seems to have few allegiances, but fortunately he’s always trying to do the right thing, unlike the now-deceased Griggs. That conflict is sure to end messily, but presumably the odd trio that went out should come back alive. Back at the camp, Reverend Cole’s crisis of faith presented some unforeseen personality from his daughter, recalling how he used to beat her mother and telling him that she’s not afraid of him.
