What I’m Watching: Shameless (Season Premiere)

Shameless: Season 2, Episode 1 “Summertime” (B+)

I am so excited to have this show back, and this premiere indicates that this is going to be a fantastic season. Frank betting a random guy in the bar $10,000 that he can’t get tased twice and stay standing was never a good plan, and his folly permitted him to descend to some unfortunate and hilarious depths, begging for money with Liam on his back before abandoning his son as collateral. Liam’s siblings rallied to his defense impressively, and they do seem to have a great operation going, with de facto matriarch Fiona only to be woken for exposed bone. Fiona’s bar life and new guy make it seem as if she’s forgotten all about Steve, and she’s the only one who can tolerate Jasmine. Debbie’s day care business is quite amusing, and Lip’s cage-fighting appears to be netting him some decent cash, though I’m a bit concerned that he’s still going after Karen, who now seems set on abstinence. Sheila is making good strides, literally, and is doing much better than she was before, though that’s sure to come tumbling down if Eddie’s fate is discovered. Kash avoiding his wife and skipping town means that Ian has lost one safety net and presumably gained himself quite a bit of responsibility. I’m saddened to see the Jane Levy’s casting in “Suburgatory” means that she didn’t return to reprise her role as Mandy here. Kevin’s pot business could have been a fun storyline, but it’s probably for the best that they offloaded most of the supply and found productive uses for it.
